The aerator helps with soil compaction, soil health, forage growth and yields. This project is funded in part by the “Merrimack County Conservation District” of Merrimack County, New Hampshire. The preliminary soils and compaction analysis were performed in accordance with the specifications provided by Cornell University. We will be doing another test/analysis in 2017 after all the aeration.

We found one of our steers had met a porcupine. Brought him and a buddy into the handling facility to take care of him. This is really about no stress cattle handling. One person, 2 steers, no vocalization and using one’s body position to move and position the cattle.  The video tells the story.

Getting ready for winter again….. We use different hay feeders depending on the weight and size of the cattle. This winter we will have over 25 calves. The feeder below holds two, 750 lbs each, round bales and the feeding stations are low to the ground. Therefore the smaller calves can eat as much as they want to. Cindy and Neil are putting the roof on. The roof just helps keep the hay fresh, particularly from the rain and sleet.

Usually long before now, our cattle are off their pastures and in their winter holding area where they have comfortable shelter, easy access to high grade hay and clean water. But it is Dec 3 now and we should be getting into winter. So it does not matter that it is 40-50 degrees,  we are gathering them up (about 30 calves and some yearlings) and getting them all re-aquainted.

This is what is was like last year on Thanksgiving Day. Bond and Charlotte were the only ones in the pasture.
